Let Santa Cruz voters decide about library plan

Letter to the SC Sentinel, 1/15/22

I read with interest Mark Levy’s Jan. 13 Guest Commentary in the Sentinel because it offers a compromise to the controversy regarding the downtown library. His vision for a communal space where the library is today corresponds to a dream that many have especially as our city is becoming denser. We need a place that’s green, where we can relax and walk in peace. But why not make it simple? Don’t destroy the library. Instead, upgrade it, make it beautiful. We overwhelmingly voted to fund that. Leave the farmers market where it is today and free the Heritage Trees from the tar and stones that trap their roots. Make it green. Give it air. Encourage walking and biking downtown. But most of all, let’s decide this for ourselves. This is Our Downtown and Our Future.
