Reflections on revitalizing the existing library

Letter to the SC Sentinel, 2/17/2022

The other day as I approached the downtown library to return some books, I was struck by the presence of the beautiful sunshine, the trees, and the feeling of openness of the Civic Center. The experience of approaching a relocated library in a mixed use building closer to the hubbub of Pacific Avenue, in an eight-story building, will be a very different one indeed. Yes, the architects may provide for “natural light” flooding through a wall of windows (possibly glaring light?), but that’s not the same as outdoor natural sunlight, fresh air, and the feel of a stand-alone library on a familiar pleasant street.

The words of Joni Mitchell sounded in my head — “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone …” I know others share my view and we can find a way to revitalize the existing library. It’s doable.
